What sets Open Source apart from Commercial/Closed Source ?
Free/open-source software – the source availability model used by free and open-source software (FOSS) and closed source are two approaches to the distribution of software.
Under the closed-source model source code is not released to the public. Closed-source software is maintained by a team who produces their product in a compiled-executable state, which is what the market is allowed access to. Microsoft, the owner and developer of Windows and Microsoft Office, along with other major software companies, have long been proponents of this business model.
The FOSS model allows for able users to view and modify a product's source code, but most of such code is not in the public domain. Common advantages cited by proponents for having such a structure are expressed in terms of trust, acceptance, teamwork and quality.
Ubuntu
It is Developed/Maintained by Canonical ltd Community. Initially it was first released on 20 May 2004, ubuntu is a Unix like OS based on Debian.

If your a developer it will be the best OS to play around, with its Powerful & Simple User Interface anyone can learn to operate it. (although its takes patience to learn those commands).
Once your all comfy with the settings & commands you'll find it Amazing than other Commercial OS.
when i say open source it does include many other distros that are present in Linux but Ubuntu with more than 20 million users worldwide with their amazing community gets the popular vote among others.
What will you miss installing Ubuntu ?
One thing is for sure you'll not get to play high end games :P although its app store has several games (little) like Soduku, battle tank and few other kids games (it also has mid sized games).
What you will gain (for students/developers) ?
It comes Pre-installed with all the Educational & Developer tools that you need to separately install on other OS. Even those that are not there can be downloaded from Ubuntu App Store free of Cost (Although for some Apps you need to pay few bucks, not an Issue for Windows/Mac Users who are ready to pay huge sums just to get there work done).
Security
In terms of Security (Being a Linux Kernel at its Core), it is most Secured OS, i am not saying that it is Hack proof, but it can protect your PC from any Typical kind of Attacks for which you need to install Anti-Virus on other OS.
where can i get Ubuntu ?
Check out the Ubuntu Website www.Ubuntu.com , download the ISO (image file) burn it to CD/DVD and use it either as a demo version (which involves you to put that CD Everytime u want to run that OS from Boot menu) or you can Dual Boot ( Side by side installation along with windows, mac or whatever OS your using). You can even replace the existing OS and just keep Ubuntu [depends on you].

Canonical has done really good job with bringing ubuntu touch for android devices. Although its in preview stage (available for developers with limited or no warranty). I hope they converge with all the major carriers so that people can enjoy the freedom that comes with Open Source.
Installation
At Present you can install it only on High-End devices like Google Nexus & Galaxy Nexus. You can even install it on other devices if it meets below requirements
Minimum- Dual Core Processor with 512 Mb RAM
Optimum- Qual Core Processor with 1Gb RAM.

Basically what i am trying to say is open Source can be edited/modified/distributed and in every possible way Exploited by anyone, whereas the CS(Closed/Commercial Source) is the other way around.
